Catch and Carry

Just in case you didn’t know, it’s called catch and carry — and yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like. When Bald Eagles catch smaller fish, they’ll often keep flying and eat on the wing, minimizing the chance that another eagle spots the meal and attempts to steal it midair.

Worth Knowing

Fish make up a significant portion of a Bald Eagle’s diet. In studies conducted in the Pacific Northwest, fish accounted for over 70% of prey items consumed by Bald Eagles. This reliance highlights both the eagle’s adaptability and the importance of healthy river ecosystems that support abundant fish populations. (Source: Learn Bird Watching)
